OAKLAND — A woman survived an estimated 30-foot fall Monday morning after she leapt from a third-floor apartment near Lake Merritt to escape a violent attack by her boyfriend, authorities said.

The woman suffered broken bones and multiple cuts and bruises but was in stable condition at a hospital.

The 35-year-old boyfriend was later arrested and some guns were recovered from a bag he had, authorities said.

The attack happened about 10:55 a.m. Monday in an apartment building in the 500 block of MacArthur Boulevard near Beacon Street where the two lived, police said.

Authorities said the man and woman are in a relationship and have a child together. The child was not at the apartment at the time.

Police said the two got into an argument but did not say what it was about.

Police said the man threatened to kill the woman and began choking and beating her.

The woman, in fear of her life, jumped out a third-floor window and landed on the ground below, police said.

Next, police were called to the scene and a standoff began with the suspect. He was finally found a few hours later hiding in a stairwell area, authorities said. A bag near him had two guns inside, police said.

The man was booked at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of numerous charges, including attempted murder, inflicting corporal injury to a parent of one’s child, false imprisonment with violence, making criminal threats and weapons crimes. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
