Google Street ViewA young girl apparently trying to cross lanes of traffic on Highway 101 was killed Friday night, California Highway Patrol officers said.
The deadly incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m., when CHP received reports of a pedestrian struck by multiple vehicles on Highway 101 near the Monterey County town of Prunedale. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the girl was already deceased. It appeared she had tried to walk through the southbound lanes toward the center median. It’s not clear why the girl was on the roadway or how she got there, although that stretch of 101 is near a gas station and several businesses.
The driver of the Nissan that initially struck the girl said they saw a child dressed in black clothing step out in front of their vehicle. Although they tried to swerve, they hit the child, CHP said. The driver has not been charged with a crime, and neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the incident.
The victim has not been publicly identified.
The incident is still under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call CHP’s Monterey office at 831-770-8000.
