The defending champion Colorado Avalanche are officially on the ropes after a Game 5 loss to the Seattle Kraken, and after the game Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon wasn’t very happy about what he thought was a crucial missed call.
Midway through the second period, MacKinnon controlled the puck in the Kraken zone before he was hauled down Kraken defenceman Will Borgen as he fell to the ice. MacKinnon lost the puck and slammed his stick into the glass in frustration after no call was made.
The Kraken then collected the loose puck with MacKinnon distracted, and quickly transitioned the length of the ice where Tye Kartye would find the back of the net in his first-career NHL game to give Seattle a 2-1 lead.
The Avalanche forward had some choice words for the referees after the game, as he thought the call was obvious.
“I get five feet on a guy and he takes my feet out,” MacKinnon told reporters. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. It’s not 1975; I feel like that’s a trip.”
He did admit that he had to do a better job at keeping his cool instead of slamming his stick.
“It’s on me there.”
With the 3-2 loss, the Avalanche now have no margin for error against a Kraken team making their first playoff appearance in franchise history.
