4.4 magnitude quake rattles NorCal, spurs aftershocks


A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near Cobb in Lake County on Tuesday night, the USGS said.
USGSAfter a magnitude 4.4 earthquake gave Northern California a shake Tuesday night, a series of aftershocks followed, including a magnitude 3.3 tremor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The magnitude 4.4 shaker hit at 10:39 p.m. about 4.5 miles northwest of Cobb, a small town in Lake County, just north of the San Francisco Bay Area, USGS said. It had a depth of about a half-mile.
Light shaking was felt widely in Lake County, while weak shaking was experienced as far south as Fremont, as far north as Ukiah and as far east as Sacramento, according to the USGS. Nearly 700 people reported feeling shaking to the agency’s”Felt Report.”
Within the hour following the first quake, there were five aftershocks ranging in size from magnitude 2.5 to 3.3. Three were near the original quake and two were recorded about the 5 miles east of Cobb near The Geysers geothermal field in eastern Sonoma County.
Cobb is a town of about 800 people.
The USGS issued a ShakeAlert immediately after Tuesday night’s first quake.
